Paddy McNair made history with Northern Ireland on Thursday night as he helped them to a 3-1 victory over Greece at Windsor Park to reach the European Championships.

Any type of victory would have done for Michael O'Neil's men but they did it in style in front of a sellout crowd in Belfast to see their nation qualify for a major tournament for the first time in 30 years.

McNair part of illustrous win for Northern Ireland

Southampton midfielder Steven Davis scored a goal in each half to give the hosts a comfortable 2-0 lead against the top seed in the group. Things got even better for the hosts as Kilmarnock's Josh Magennis just after half-time gave the Irish a strong lead and had the home side dreaming of a place in next summer's tournament in France. Windsor Park was bouncing, and not even a late consolation goal from Christos Aravidis could take the gloss off a momentous triumph.

The young United defender was born in 1995 - nine years after the last time Northern Ireland were in a major competition made his first competitive start for his country and played for 85 minutes before being replaced by Luke McCullough. McNair, 20 made a breakthrough to the national side after a strong season under Louis van Gaal last year and has represented Northern Ireland since the age of 15.

Craig Cathcart (Watford), Corry Evans (Blackburn Rovers) and Oliver Norwood (Reading) have all previously represented Manchester United since a young age, all of which have departed the club now, but the trio played in their comfortable win over Greece, but Jonny Evans, now at West Bromwich Albion missed out due to injury.

McNair is expected to play against Finland tomorrow evening and a win for his country would see them go to the Euro's as group winners.
