Jose Mourinho’s agent Jorge Mendes has responded to the claims that the Portuguese manager wrote a six-page letter to Manchester United regarding the manager’s job.

It emerged on Sunday that the 52-year-old - who was sacked by Chelsea in December - sent a document detailing his suitability for the manager’s job at Old Trafford.

Mendes denies reports of letter

However, Mendes has released a short statement in response, stating the supposition Mourinho was offering his services to United is “absolutely ridiculous."

The statement read: “It does not occur to anyone that a coach like Jose Mourinho can write letters to clubs offering their services.

“It is absolutely ridiculous and totally absurd.”

Gap widens between United and top four

Louis van Gaal’s side were booed off the pitch as United fell to a late 1-0 home defeat to Southampton on Saturday afternoon.

The loss sees the gap between themselves and Premier League leaders Leicester City widen to 10 points, as United have taken 37 points from their first 23 league games this season.

Gill not happy with style of play

Former chief executive David Gill claimed that he hoped results would be better and even added that he went to the cinema instead of watching United on Match of the Day.

Gill told BBC's Sportsweek: “I am not going to sit here and say that it is that attractive. For me, what we did in the past was great, but you have to have the players to do that.

“Manchester United going back to the 1950s played in a certain way. We want attacking football and I am sure that will be a key part going forward.”

Van Gaal has said that he has not lived up to his expectations, saying: “They have – or they had – great expectations of me, and I cannot fulfil them, so I am very frustrated because of that.”

United have failed to score in the first-half of their last 11 home games, the only goal that was scored in that period of games was Cameron Jerome’s goal in Norwich City’s 2-1 win back in December.
