Anthony Martial scored Manchester United's 1000th home goal in the Premier League to send them one point behind rivals Manchester City. Club legend, and national hero, Sir Bobby Charlton was honoured before the game as the South Stand at Old Trafford was renamed the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand. He was clearly moved, standing and applauding the fans in all four stands before being moved on by his wife.

The game wasn't the perfect memento for the day, but the second half was more exciting than the first. Half-time substitute Timothy Fosu-Mensah latched onto a flick from Marcus Rashford  before crossing perfectly to Martial, two 18-year-olds and a 20-year-old combining to win the game. How did the rest of the team rate?

De Gea's anticipation and movement shines

David de Gea - 7 The Spanish goalkeeper made his regular excellent stops but what really impressed was his anticipation against the quick, strong Romelu Lukaku

Matteo Darmian - 6  He has been described as average and mediocre recently but his ability to play at right-back and left-back was helpful to Van Gaal once more today as he went from right to left at half-time. He wasn't impressive but he made no mistakes. His attacking contribution must improve if he is to continue as first choice.

Chris Smalling - 6  After playing twice for England during the international break, Smalling didn't look fatigued. He committed a few complacent passes but recovered, such is the nature of his defensive qualities.

Daley Blind - 8 Commanding display as dealt with the far stronger and far quicker Lukaku. His confidence to come out of defence and play the ball to spark attacks is refreshing and wonderful. Covered for Marcos Rojo throughout the first half.

Blind stats - Everton: 100% aerial duels won | 3 interceptions | 3 blocks | 2 clearances | 2 tackles won

Marcos Rojo - 5 The Argentina was deployed at left-back once more and consistently left the flank uncovered. He often wasted attacking opportunities as well. Rightfully substituted at half-time for the 18-year-old Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

Midfield slow but help defensively

Michael Carrick - 6 Quiet, but important. Helped with the calming down of the game as Everton grew in confidence in the second half.

Morgan Schneiderlin - 6 Made some vital contributions in defence through interceptions and blocks. Slowed the midfield down, with Carrick, in attack.

Attacking combination superb again

Juan Mata - 6 Very quiet in the first half but better after the break.

Jesse Lingard - 7 Impact was difficult to notice but playing as a number 10 allows him to develop attacks very well, helping Rashford and Martial. Does the simple things well and it pays off, also helped out defensively.

Anthony Martial - 8 Excellent as usual. Made chances often. Particular highlight was coming inside from the flank, going past people with ease before his shot was deflected. Good movement for the goal and finished calmly, which has become unsurprising for United's best outfield player.

Marcus Rashford - 8 Rashford couldn't get on the scoresheet but was entertaining and effective. He lost the ball more than anyone else for United but it doesn't matter. Movement on and off the ball is superb. Has mastered the art of holding-up the ball for his teammates to arrive, as he showed against Arsenal to assist Ander Herrera. His flick provided the chance for Fosu-Mensah to cross for Martial's goal.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah - 8 Huge impact in both attack and defence. Came on for a struggling Rojo at half-time. He provided excellent crosses at right-back, including for Martial's goal, before a goalline block stopped Everton equalising. Was composed on the ball at centre-back. Should be given many more chances as the season concludes, one of United's brightest prospects.

Ander Herrera - 6 Came on for Michael Carrick with just over 30 minutes left. Didn't have a huge impact on the game but helped as Everton looked like scoring.

Antonio Valencia - 6  Came on at right-back after an injury to Daley Blind. Made some very important tackles.
