Manchester United players and staff flew out to China on Tuesday afternoon as they continue their preparations for the new season.

Manager Jose Mourinho named a 25-man squad for the tour on Tuesday morning, which includes matches against Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City in the Far East.

Pre-season squad revealed

Mourinho has only had one match, a 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic at the weekend, and one week in training with his new group of players to decide who will travel to China for the next week.

Sam Johnstone, who played 82 minutes against Wigan, beat Joel Castro Pereira to the third goalkeeping spot, as he was named alongside David de Gea and Sergio Romero for those who will compete for a place in goal over the coming days.

Marcos Rojo and Antonio Valencia, who both played at the Copa America earlier in the summer like Romero, are also in the squad, whilst all five Reds that exited Euro 2016 at the round of 16 stage are in the travelling party, too.

New signings Eric Bailly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan will both also travel, as well as a number of academy players, including Axel Tuanzebe, who Mourinho picked out for praise after facing Wigan.

The absentees – explained

Whilst five Reds that played at Euro 2016 have already returned to be a part of the travelling squad, the remaining five that reached the quarter-final stage or later, who are Anthony Martial, Morgan Schneiderlin, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Matteo Darmian and Marouane Fellaini, will not travel.

Meanwhile, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who played for Sweden at Euro 2016 but did not join United until after his country were knocked out in the group stage, has been given additional time off on holiday.

Those players could link up with the squad at a later date, with the Reds also set to face Galatasaray in Gothenburg after the two matches in China. However, none of James Wilson, Tyler Blackett or Guillermo Varela have been selected in the squad, with the trio all apparently close to leaving the club, whilst Cameron Borthwick-Jackson has a groin strain.

There are other youth players such as Tyrell Warren, who was another man pinpointed as deserving of a chance against Wigan by Mourinho, that will not be going to China. Although that is unfortunate, there are only 25 players that can travel.
