Manchester United have released their new home kit for the 2016/17 season.

The shirt is a split of two shades of red. In the centre, strips of hexagons separate the two tones.

The shorts are white with a red trim while the socks are black with a red trim at the top. Under the red trim on the socks, is the iconic Red Devil with the trident.

Adidas’ three iconic stripes are down the side of the shirt similarly to Real Madrid’s home kit. Last year, the iconic three stripes went down the sleeves, as their jerseys have done traditionally for many years.

A homage to United's roots and their city

Adidas decided to go with the two-tone red split design in honor of the yellow and green two-toned kit of Newton Heath back in 1878.

1878 was the year United were formed as Newton Heath LYR Football Club from the Carriage and Wagon department. The department was from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway depot at Newton Heath.

The team also used the coat of arms for the City of Manchester on their shirt. The honeycomb (hexagon) split centre is on the coat of arms and splits the two tones of red.

The honeycomb design was inspired by a worker bee which appears in the crest and comes from the Industrial Revolution where the city of Manchester had a significant role.

Chevrolet and throwback to 2008

The kit may remind some people of the 2008 home kit, the last time Manchester won the UEFA Champions League. The new home kit is an all-in-red crewneck similar to the strip that season.

United’s kit sponsor, Chevrolet, is still prominent with their logo and name featuring in the centre of the shirt.

Pricing

The kit will cost fans £60, with the price rising to £65 for the long-sleeved version. The shorts are £30 while the socks are £13. A full kit costs £103 while a full children’s kit will cost as much as £88.
