Sevilla defender Timothee Kolodziejczak has reportedly rejected a move to Premier League Middlesbroughwho are short of a centre back ahead of the new season.

Daniel Ayala and new signing Bernardo Espinosa are injury doubts ahead of Boro’s Premier League opener at home to Stoke in less than a week’s time - which is set to be a sell-out.

Despite making nine signings already this summer, manager Aitor Karanka admitted he still needs reinforcements following his sides 3-1 friendly victory over Aston Villa on Saturday.

"We need more (signings) because we don't have central defenders," the Boro boss told the Gazette after the game. "With the injuries we have we need to improve.”

"I don't want to put all the pressure on Dael Fry (the 18-year-old, who played the full 90 minutes at Villa Park) for example, as he's been brilliant and he has a bright future, he's improving every single day but he needs to keep going forward and do the right steps.”

"For that reason, we need to bring in more in that area. But we have the nucleus of the team done,” he added.

However, despite attempts to lure him to the Riverside, it appears that 24-year-old Kolodziejczak will not become the Teessiders’ tenth new arrival in this transfer window.

Kolodziejczak wants to play in Europe

According to Spanish newspaper Estadio Deportivo, the 6ft 1in French defender turned down a move to the Premier League because he is happy at Sevilla, where he has two years left on his contract and wants to continue playing European football.

Kolodziejczak played 50 times in all competitions for the Spanish side last season but was left on the bench for their Europa League final with Liverpool in May.

The defender also turned down a move to Swansea according to Fichajes.net, as he wants to fight for his place at Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

Middlesbrough have two more friendlies before the Premier League returns on August 13.

The first comes tonight when they take on Italian side Udinese away from home. Karanka’s side then face Real Sociedad at the Riverside on Saturday.
