The Geordie side will have a price to paid if they want to get one of the Bundesliga's biggest stars of last season. VfL Wolfsburg's Bas Dost was a sensation in Germany last season as he scored 20 goals in all compeititons in which 16 of those made him the fifth top goalscorer in Germany as Wolfsburg finished second behind Bayern Munich in the league and were DFB-Pokal champions by defeating Borussia Dortmund in the final.

The Dutchman's performance proved worthy enough that he would later make his international return for Holland in three years as Guus Hiddink called him up into the squad for a European qualifier against Turkey, and a friendly against Spain. He made his debut in the first match on March 28 that the Amsterdam ArenA, replacing defensive midfielder Nigel de Jong after 63 minutes as the Netherlands equalised for a 1-1 draw.

While Newcastle aren't the only club that want the Dutch forward, Wolfsburg sporting director Klaus Allofs has stated Dost does not want to leave the club and that early bids from potential suitors don’t match the reasonable fee meaning clubs will need to increase their offer if they want to sign the 26-year-old.

Allofs spoke to the German media saying: ''We spoke to his agent for the first time over the last week, and it has not turned out that Bas wants to leave. He feels very well in Wolfsburg.”

''And speaking on offers for the player so far, I read lump sum payments from 10 million Euros (£7.1million) to 12 million Euros (£8.5million) for Bas. But then I refer to Roberto Firmino’s example who went to Liverpool, and say they will have to get used to higher amounts if any club really wants to buy Dost.”

It seems to be very wise considering that many have thought this would be a downgrade from playing in the UEFA Champions League to a club in the Premier League that nearly got relegated after a poor season, but Steve McClaren and Mike Ashley will not go down without a fight.
