Steve McClaren has named his new coaching staff at Newcastle United, despite yet making a summer signing in his new role.

The former Middlesbrough, FC Twente and VfL Wolfsburg manager took over the managerial role at Newcastle United following the departure of interim boss, John Carver, after spending two years at Derby County.

Announced in a manager email to the fans, McClaren, 54, confirmed the arrival of Paul Simpson, Ian Cathro, Alessandro Schoenmaker and Steve Black amongst the coaching staff, whilst goalkeeper coach, Andy Woodman remains at the club.

Simpson, 48, also worked under McClaren at Derby, after previously managing a host of clubs, such as Preston North End, Stockport County and Northwich Victoria.

Twenty-eight year old Cathro spent last season at La Liga side, Valencia – working as an assistant to Nuno Santo, helping the Spanish side to finishing fourth in the league, earning them a UEFA Champions League spot.

Schoenmaker, 35, joined the Magpies as a fitness coach, previously working under McClaren at both Twente, where they won the Eredivisie, and Wolfsburg.

Black returns to St. James Park having worked at the club during the 1990s. After working with former England rugby international, Jonny Wilkinson and QPR’s Charlie Austin, Black returns to Newcastle in a consultancy role.

Who will be the first player in at Newcastle United?

Newcastle are still hoping to strike a deal for Wolfsburg striker, Bas Dost, with McClaren told he’ll need to pay more than the £9million they’ve already offered.

Dost, 26, was one of the most prolific goalscorers in the Bundesliga last season, netting 16 league goals, adding to his two in the Europa League – despite a slow start to his season.

Should Newcastle fail to reach an agreement with the German side, McClaren has also stated an interest in Anderlecht and Serbia international, Aleksandar Mitrovic.
