Serbian striker Aleksandar Mitrovic is close to signing a deal with Newcastle United as he currently undergoing a medical on Tyneside. If all goes to plan, a £13million fee for the Anderlecht striker will be paid by the Magpies.

The player’s representatives were in Newcastle last week finalising personal terms after an agreement was reached with his Belgian club.

Who is Aleksandar Mitrovic?

Mitrovic is a 20-year-old forward who scored 23 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions for Anderlecht last season - 20 of those earned him the Golden Boot in Belgian Pro League.

He impressed in the UEFA Champions League group stages last season, scoring in the matches against Borussia Dortmund and in a 3-3 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates last November.

Anderlecht finished third in that group and got relegated to the Europa League, where they were once again knocked out in the round of 32 by Russian side Dynamo Moscow.

Mitrovic has scored 44 goals in 90 games for Anderlecht in two years since joining them from Partizan Belgrade - in a then club record €5m deal in August 2013. During that spell, he enjoyed success by winning the league and Belgian Super Cup in 2014 and also finished runners-up in the Belgian Cup last season.

At international level, Mitrovic won the UEFA European Under-19 Championship and was voted the best player of the tournament in 2013 for his native Serbia.

Only a month prior he had made his international debut in Brussels against Belgium in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier, where he played 69 minutes. In September of that year, he would score his only international goal of 13 appearances, to date, for his country against Croatia in a 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw.

It will also be interesting, given his recent attitude problems for club and country, to see how he will cope in the Premier League.
