Three of Newcastle United's summer signings made their Premier League debuts in the 2-2 draw with Southampton on the opening weekend of the season.

Georginio Wijnaldum and Chancel Mbemba both started the match and Aleksandar Mitrovic was a second-half substitute.

Georginio Wijnaldum

The attacking midfielder joined Newcastle from PSV Eindhoven for a fee of £14.5 million, impressing on his Premier League debut.

The 24-year-old capped a superb display with a goal. Wijnaldum steered his powerful header from the centre of the box into the top left corner after a fast break from Newcastle. Wijnaldum made a good run to get into the box to reach Gabriel Obertan's cross.

The Dutchman looked at home at St. James' Park and was looking to get forward at every possible opportunity. He provided a strong driving force from midfield, something that Newcastle have been lacking since Yohan Cabaye's departure last January.

The former PSV captain was lively, made intelligent attacking runs and good interplay particularly with Moussa Sissoko.

He was substituted after 81 minutes and was replaced by fellow Dutchman Siem de Jong.

Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren described Wijnaldum's debut as "excellent" and said that the goal he scored was a "great goal."

Chancel Mbemba

The central defender certainly made an impression both on and off the pitch. Mbemba, who signed from Anderlecht for £8.5 million, wore a tuxedo as he arrived at St. James' Park before the match, instead of the conventional tracksuit.

On the pitch, the Belgian's debut performance was impressive. The 20-year-old, who had only played 25 minutes for Newcastle in pre-season, partnered Fabio Coloccini, who had not featured in pre-season at all in the centre of defence. McClaren said after the match that it looked like the two had "played together forever."

The Belgian may have been out-jumped for Graziano Pelle's opening goal, but he made several crucial interceptions and blocks during the course of the match.

Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul said, that despite Mbemba only arriving at Newcastle just over a week ago, he had a "fantastic day" and "he is only going to get better."

Aleksandar Mitrovic

The striker, who joined from Anderlecht for £13 million, replaced Newcastle's first goalscorer Papiss Cisse in the 75th minute.

The 20-year-old was definitely keen to make an immediate impression, however he was perhaps too eager. Mitrovic was booked 16 seconds into his debut for his slide tackle on Matt Targett. McClaren admitted that Mitrovic was "fortunate" not to receive a red card for the challenge and the Newcastle manager added that "there would be no complaints if he did."

"He wanted to come on and impress. He is only a young lad and you can see how strong and direct he is. He is going to be a player," McClaren added.

Newcastle United's next match is against Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.
