Newcastle United travel to Old Trafford on Saturday still looking for their first win of the Premier League season.

The Magpies drew 2-2 against Southampton on the opening weekend before falling to a 2-0 defeat away at Swansea City last Saturday.

However, they face a tough task against Manchester United, who are one of four Premier League teams with maximum points after the first two games.

Manchester United - Newcastle United Head-to-head

Newcastle have a miserable record against Manchester United, having lost 25 Premier League games against the Red Devils, more than they have against any other side.

In fact, Newcastle's only Premier League victory at Old Trafford was by a 1-0 scoreline in December 2013.

Magpies still looking for first Premier League win

Although there is no reason for panic just yet for Newcastle supporters, Steve McClaren is in danger of enduring a worryingly tough start to life at St. James' Park. After a draw and a defeat from their opening two games, Newcastle have just one point and the match against Manchester United is the start of a tough run of fixtures for the Magpies.

Following the trip to Old Trafford, the Magpies will face the other three teams that finished in the top four last season (Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City) in the next five games.

McClaren is only two Premier League games into his Newcastle reign and he needs time. His side showed plenty of promise in the season opener against Southampton, Newcastle's summer signings have also impressed and the signing of winger Florian Thauvin will be a boost. However, Newcastle have lost 10 of their last 13 league games and they need to improve quickly otherwise it is going to be a long, hard season.

One area that needs improvement is Newcastle's away from. The Magpies have lost seven consecutive Premier League away matches, they have not lost eight league games in a row since a run of nine defeats in October 1977.

McClaren's return to Old Trafford

Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren spent two-and-a-half years as assistant manager to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United from 1999 to 2001.

He enjoyed plenty of success at Old Trafford, winning three Premier League titles, the Champions League and the FA Cup (when they beat Newcastle in the final).

The opposition

Manchester United will be looking to maintain their winning start to the season, having opened their Premier League campaign with two consecutive 1-0 wins over Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa.

It has been a busy week for Louis Van Gaal's side, after kicking off their Champions League campaign with an impressive 3-1 victory over Club Brugge on Tuesday, and they will now try and gain some momentum.

Despite the three wins, there have been questions asked about United's performances particular about their attacking options and whether club captain Wayne Rooney will be effective this season. Rooney has enjoyed playing against Newcastle during his career, having scored 11 goals against the Magpies in just 20 starts.

Manchester United have a very good record at Old Trafford and have won 15 of their last 19 Premier League games on home turf.

Manchester United - Newcastle United News

Newcastle could give a debut to new winger Florian Thauvin, who signed from Marseille for £13 million this week.

However, the Magpies will be without defender Daryl Janmaat, who is suspended after being sent-off in the first half of last weekend's defeat to Swansea.

Midfielder Moussa Sissoko is also a doubt, after limping off at half-time in the game against Swansea with a groin injury.

Manchester United are still without the suspended Maroune Fellaini while Phil Jones remains absent with thrombosis and Marco Rojo is also unlikely to feature as he lacks match sharpness.

Sergio Romero will continue in goal for the Red Devil's, with Louis Van Gaal saying David de Gea will not be picked until after the transfer window has shut.
