Newcastle United will be hoping to record their first Premier League victory of the season when they travel to West Ham on Monday night.

It has been a tough start to life as Newcastle United head coach for Steve McClaren, with his side picking up just two points from their opening four games.

Last year the Magpies failed to win any of their first seven games but Newcastle and McClaren cannot afford another long season.

Head-to-head

Newcastle have only lost two of their previous nine league games at Upton Park, but the Magpies lost on their last visit to West Ham with Aaron Cresswell scoring the only goal of the game last November.

Both sides won their home matches in the two Premier League meetings between the pair last season, with Newcastle winning 2-0 in the most recent fixture on the final day of the season, which saw the Magpies avoid relegation.

A tough start for Steve McClaren and Newcastle United

Although there is no reason for panic just yet for Steve McClaren and Newcastle supporters, McClaren is in danger of enduring a worryingly tough start to life at St. James' Park.

Newcastle are yet to win a Premier League match after their first four matches and with games against Chelsea and Manchester City in their next three fixtures, the Magpies need to improve quickly starting on Monday.

McClaren needs to rediscover Newcastle's winning mentality, having lost 12 of their last 17 Premier League games and winning just three times in their last 23 league games.

Newcastle also need to improve their away form. The Magpies have not won on the road in the league since 31 January 2015, including a run of seven consecutive Premier League away defeats.

You cannot win games if you do not score....

Newcastle's main problem has been scoring goals. They have found the back of the net just twice so far this season, which is the lowest in the Premier League, and have failed to score in their last three league games.

McClaren wants his side to be hard to beat, but it is very difficult to win or get something out of a game when you do not score or when you have to play most of the match with 10-men, as Newcastle have discovered.

The Magpies had to play five minutes of the first-half and the entire second-half of their match against Swansea City with 10-men, following Daryl Janmaat's dismissal, and most of the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal with 10-men too, after Aleksandar Mitrovic was sent-off in the 16th minute.

In 96 meetings between West Ham and Newcastle, there has been only one red card, and that was in the Magpies' last visit to Upton Park, when Moussa Sissoko was sent-off in the second-half of West Ham's 1-0 win.

The opposition

Despite a 100% away record this season, including impressive away wins against Arsenal and Liverpool, West Ham are still looking for their first points at Upton Park, after defeats to Leicester City and Bournemouth.

West Ham have been one of the strongest attacking sides in the Premier League this season, scoring nine times in their first four games (only Manchester City have scored more).

The Hammers also strengthened their attacking options on transfer deadline day with midfielders Victor Moses and Michail Antonio along with striker Nikica Jelavic arriving at Upton Park on deadline day and they could all make their West Ham debuts on Monday.

Team news

Newcastle will be without striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, who is starting his three-match suspension after being sent-off in the Magpies' 1-0 defeat to Arsenal.

Defender Paul Dummett is also out after suffering a setback in his recovery from a hamstring injury.

Former Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll is in contenion for West Ham after recovering from a knee injury. However, Alex Song, who rejoined the Hammers on loan on transfer deadline day, is out with an ankle problem.
