Steve McClaren has urged Newcastle United supporters not to turn on his current squad, stating the Premier League club will do “whatever it takes” to turn their season around.

The Tyneside club currently sit at the foot of the table after their worst start to a Premier League season, with the latest 6-1 defeat against Manchester City their latest headache.

Following their latest defeat, McClaren, 54, said: “The fans are magnificent and all the players have to appreciate the fans,” after the majority of Toon supporters applauded the side off at the weekend.

“Through the good times and bad times, we have to stick together,” said McClaren.

Since his arrival, McClaren made it aware to players and fans that he wanted to adopt attacking football, similar to the likes of Barcelona – win, lose or draw.

“I have seen in the last two weeks, especially with our system and shape, that we can win football matches,” says McClaren.

Newcastle found themselves two goals up against Chelsea, before conceding two late goals to Ramires and Willian in the closing stages, throwing away three points.

The bottom-placed club were also one goal to the good against Manchester City after Aleksandar Mitrović had given Newcastle the lead after 18 minutes – only to be undone by five Sergio Aguero goals in the space on 20 minutes.

McClaren believes Newcastle were “unlucky against Chelsea,” and “who knows what could have happened at half-time (at City) if we’d been 2-0 up.”

With eight games played in the Premier League, the Magpies face a crunch tie against Norwich City after the international break, before the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland on 25 October.

“There is enough in there,” says McClaren. “We need consistency but we’ve had a tough start. Our season begins now.”

Full-back pulls out of international squad

Daryl Janmaat has been forced to pull out of the Netherlands squad after suffering a knee injury, joining 11 other Newcastle United players on the sidelines.

With full-backs Massadio Haidara, Paul Dummett and Kevin Mbabu all injured, McClaren is likely to be left searching for makeshift defenders for their tie against Norwich.

Centre-back Jamaal Lascelles was forced to play at left-back against Manchester City, after replacing the injured Mbabu.
