Newcastle United earned their first win in the Premier League with Georginio Wijnaldum the star of the show, scoring four goals.

Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic also found the net as Newcastle secured three points against Norwich City.

It was by no mean feat for the Magpies as Dieumerci Mbokani and Nathan Redmond pegged Newcastle back on two occasions.

Goals galore in the north east

Moussa Sissoko marked his 100th appearance for Newcastle with three assists in the first-half. Wijnaldum opened the scoring after 15 minutes with a well-executed finish past John Ruddy.

Mbokani scored his second goal in as many matches for Norwich just five minutes later prodding home a cross from Martin Olsson.

Wijnaldum headed his second of the game midway through the first-half, getting ahead of his marker to head in from six-yards out.

Perez capitalised on poor defending from Norwich after the half-hour mark, calmly slotting the ball past Ruddy into the far corner.

Newcastle were far from high and dry though as Norwich pulled a goal back just a minute later. Redmond netted his fourth of the season with a well-executed volley from close range.

Mitrovic netted Newcastle’s fourth just after the break, plucking the ball from the air before striking the ball with his left-foot, netting his second in as many games.

Wijnaldum sent the home support into a frenzy, completing his hat-trick with less than 30 minutes to play, heading home Daryl Janmaat’s cross.

Norwich just couldn't find an answer for the Dutchman, who found the back of the net with his fourth goal from just outside the area in the closing stages.

Steve McClaren’s first three points as Newcastle manager now see them climb to 18th, above their fierce rivals Sunderland who they face in the Tyne-Wear derby next weekend.

Newcastle on top from the off

McClaren’s side started the game in positive fashion as they went in search for that first win this season. Chancel Mbemba had his shot blocked following Jack Colback’s free-kick whilst Sissoko caused problems for the Norwich defence in the opening minutes.

Cheick Tiote marked his first start since last season with a yellow card in the opening six minutes for a foul on the dangerous Redmond.

Robbie Brady proved a threat for Newcastle in the first-half after his free-kick stung the pals of Robbie Elliot, who replaced the injured Tim Krul.

Wijnaldum’s opening goal was almost cancelled out by Brady, whose shot cannoned off the post from 30-yards.

Mobkani equalised before Brady’s free-kick was collected by Elliot moments later. Two quick goals from Newcastle gave them a two-goal lead before Redmond pulled a goal back as both teams pressed high up the pitch.

Mitrovic linked up with Wijnaldum in the closing stages of the first-half but the Dutchman was unable to find the target, as he went in search for his hat-trick.

Newcastle could have added another before the break only for Perez to see his effort blocked and cleared, as Newcastle took a 3-2 lead into the break.

Ruddy was certainly busy in the opening stages of the second-half. Mitrovic forced a corner which was subsequently taken by Jack Colback, before Ruddy gathered up.

Sebastian Bassong came close for that all important equaliser for Norwich but his header was cleared off the line by Wijnaldum, who appeared to cover every blade of grass.

Quick-fire goals from Mitrovic and Wijnaldum

With the game poised at 3-2, Newcastle went in search for another goal which eventually came through Mitrovic, who struck the ball sweetly past the helpless Ruddy.

Newcastle soon put the game to bed just minutes later with Wijnaldum’s third goal and the Magpies fifth of the evening, scoring his fifth goal in nine games.

Cameron Jerome came on in the closing stages for Norwich as Alex Neil's side looked to find some sort of comeback.

Wijnaldum finished the game five minutes from time with his fourth goal of the evening as Newcastle record their first win of the season.
