Newcastle United's Football Development Manager Peter Beardsley claims all the players at the club want to win, despite poor results as of late.

Poor results

Newcastle's academy teams haven't had the best of times over the last few weeks. The Under-18 side lost 5-0 at the hands of Blackburn Rovers last week, whilst the Under-21 side were beaten 3-1 at home to Derby County

Newcastle's U18's and U21's sit ninth and tenth in their respective 12 team academy leagues. That stat will concern fans even more when they realise the U21's are playing in division two. It shows the club are miles behind other Premier League teams when it comes to reserve players and youth potential.

Defiant Beardsley

Beardsley addressed rumours that had been swirling that there was a 'losing culture' at the club, something which he vigorously denies.

The ex-Newcastle forward stated that the 'main aim' for the academy and U21's was to produce players for the first team but insisted 'we all want to win', claiming that the feeling came from within everyone.

Beardsley went on to say the results that 'matter the most' are those of the first team, who are also struggling this season as they sit in 18th position with 15 games remaining.

Reasons to be cheerful

If the main aim of the reserve team is to produce players for the first team, then all is not doom and gloom. Many players have made the step up from under-21's to the bright lights of St. James' Park this season.

Rolando Aarons and Kevin Mbabu both had relatively successful spells in the team before they picked up injuries. To add to this, Cal Roberts and Lubo Satka made their debuts at Leicester City last season.

Jamie Sterry is another promising youngster who has been involved in the first team squad this year.
