Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel Mbemba and Giorginio Wijnaldum were all brought to Newcastle United to aid the mission to finish in the top eight and win a cup. With both those objectives scrapped, how good have these three players been for NUFC this season?

Newcastle's troubling season

Steve McClaren claimed his aim was to take Newcastle back to the glory days. Fans were dreaming of cup runs, impressive victories and attractive football, yet what has followed has left supporters feeling underwhelmed.

15 games remain and the Magpies sit 18th in the table and are many people's choice to be relegated this year, which would be a disastrous event for a club as big as Newcastle.

However, the three additions in question have slotted into the side quite well, despite the recent results.

Anderlecht connection

Mitrovic and Mbemba both signed from Belgian side Anderlecht and many wondered if they would be able to quickly adapt to the English game since they are both only the tender age of 21.

Mbemba has already ingrained himself into the heart of Newcastle's back line, playing alongside veteran Fabricio Coloccini. From matchday one the Congolese international was throwing himself into tackles and showing the passion that Newcastle fans adore.

Many supporters believe he is a player to hold on to for years to come. Mitrovic, on the other hand, has divided opinion on Tyneside.

The Serbian started his career on Tyneside with a host of silly challenges, unnecessary bookings and a lack of goals. He has also been described as lazy and simply not good enough.

Others disagree, however. Some spectators have enjoyed his hold up play and aerial ability. He scored a fantastic goal in the 6-2 drubbing of Norwich which fans thought would lead to the start of his scoring run.

It is believed that with the correct coaching, Mitrovic could become a future number nine for the North East club.

It hasn't all been plain sailing for Mitrovic.

Magic Gini

Despite the reservations about some summer signings there is no debate whether Wijnaldum has been a success or not. Fans already love the Dutchman and it is no surprise as he is the club's top scorer this season with nine goals, all of which have came at home.

He has fantastic technical ability and his intelligence on and off the ball is second to none. He works hard and can assist with goals, as well as scoring them. His link up play with Ayoze Perez has left fans drooling and he adds a different dimension to Newcastle on his day.

Geordie supporters will be hoping they can hold on to the midfielder for many years.

Holding on to the men

In the past players who have been adored by the NUFC faithful have left them heartbroken by moving on to bigger and better things. Will any of these three men leave the club in the near future?

Well Mitrovic probably needs a bit more development before any big guns make a move for him, as we don't know whether he still has that unpredictable temperament.

Mbemba is still young but I'm sure clubs have the player on their shortlist for the future. If he can continue to improve at the rate he currently is, he will be a fantastic defender in years to come.

Wijnaldum is a player who could definitely leave the club. If Newcastle get relegated it will make it nearly impossible to keep one of the best players of the season at the club. Fans and pundits have already been saying Manchester United should make a move for the player, due to his amazing performances in comparison to his Dutch counterpart Memphis Depay.
