Newcastle United boss Steve McClaren believes the club has done enough in the January transfer window to maintain their Premier League status.

McClaren's side travel to Merseyside on Wednesday night to play Everton, they currently sit two-points adrift of safety ahead of the clash at Goodison Park.

Newcastle United, the big spenders

The Magpies were the league's biggest spenders in the window, bringing in Jonjo Shelvey, Henri Saivet and Andros Townsend for a combined total of £29 million.

However, Newcastle worked their magic on deadline day and managed to bring in Roma forward Seydou Doumbia on loan for the rest of the season.

They also tried to make a move for West Brom striker Saido Berahino on deadline day, but a £21 million bid was rejected, but it also showed their determination to stay in the top division.

Magpies have enough to avoid drop

"Without a doubt we have enough to avoid relegation. To make a huge bid like that for Saido [Berahino] shows the ambition we've got. He would have been a bonus, but we're happy," McClaren said.

"I said yesterday that if we'd have said at the start of the window we'd get Andros Townsend and Jonjo Shelvey, two top-quality young English players, we'd have said 'you're crazy'."

The former England manager claimed that he was delighted with the business done in the window, and adding that Doumbia is a goalscorer who has played in the Champions League.

Shelvey pleases and Doumbia excites boss

McClaren added: "Jonjo [Shelvey] had a great first game against West Ham, and the new lads up things in training. We've noticed that, and I think the players need it as well.

"I think Seydou [Doumbia] can add goals - he's got a record of doing that. He's not played much recently so he needs a little bit of time.

"But with Cisse just a few weeks away, hopefully we'll have strikers who can score goals."

The head coach also added that Townsend had a good chance of starting the Everton game, saying he will be assessing the situation.
