Newcastle United were beaten for the 14th time in 18 games on Wednesday night and boss Steve McClaren has demanded a reaction from his players at the weekend.

The former England manager claimed that the defeat was "unacceptable" against an Everton side that even had their home supporters on their case after they hadn't won a home game since November.

Questions need to be answered against West Brom

Newcastle return to St. James' Park on Saturday to face West Brom, and McClaren knows his side must now find a way to end his side's poor run of form ahead of the clash.

"We need a reaction on Saturday, from individuals and collectively. We cannot lose believe. We have 14 games left and we cannot waste a game. We did that at Everton," McClaren said.

"In terms of performance, that is not our level of performance. We did not really start the second half."

"We thought we could get a result here, but there were a lot of players who weren't at the right level."

Injuries sustained on Merseyside

Newcastle will be without both Chancel Mbemba and Paul Dummett for the game on Saturday after both suffered injuries against Everton.

Jamaal Lascelles' red card handed another blow to McClaren's team, meaning three of the back four that started on Merseyside will not feature against West Brom.

McClaren said: "We will have to assess those two now. In terms of things that can go wrong - they did go wrong, especially in terms of injuries. We have to dust ourselves down now."

Did Newcastle miss a trick in the transfer window?

With such a shortage of numbers available to slot in at the back when such injuries occur, the question that is now being asked is should Newcastle have brought in a defender?

"We really tried to bring somebody in, but failed to do so. That is one of those things that are unfortunate," McClaren said.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez claimed that the Magpies were a "very different" side to the one that they faced six weeks ago, stating that it was a professional performance from his players.

What do the Magpies need against the Baggies?

Newcastle were looking like they were going to return to action with a bang following, what appeared to be, a successful transfer window - bringing in Jonjo Shelvey, Andros Townsend, Henri Saivet and Seydou Doumbia on loan.

However, the result against Everton means that the game with West Brom on Saturday is even more vital than before, and it could even be described as a six-pointer.

Questions are being asked about McClaren's future on Tyneside, with reports even suggesting a meeting may take place to discuss said matter.
