Seydou Doumbia made his first appearance at St. James' Park as Newcastle United under-21 were beaten 2-1 by Stoke City.

The Magpies were down to 10-men for almost the full game after Jamie Sterry seen red, Dominic Telford converted the resulting penalty on 11 minutes.

Daniel Barlaser hit back with a spot-kick of his own just 10 minutes later, but any chance of getting something from the game was ended when Lewis Banks scored the winning goal 13 minutes from time.

Peter Beardsley named Doumbia as an over-age player and the Ivory Coast international, who signed on loan from AS Roma, played the entire first-half.

Early goal for Stoke as Sterry gets sent off

The hosts found themselves with an early spot-kick after Sterry brought down Oliver Shenton in the box, resulting in a straight red card.

Telford fired home the resulting penalty before Sergio Molina Beloqui came close to doubling his side's lead, his long-range effort struck the woodwork.

Magpies find equaliser from spot

The hosts managed to find an equaliser, despite two more efforts from the Potters to double their lead, on 21 minutes through a penalty of their own.

Callum Roberts had his legs caught by Eddy Lecygne and Barlaser, who was named on the bench in the Premier League at the weekend, sent the keeper the wrong way, slotting home the spot-kick.

Newcastle holding on, just

Karl Darlow made a fine save to deny Telford before the Potters came close before the break through George Waring.

Doumbia made way during the break for Lewis McNall and a quiet spell followed, neither side managed to create an opening until after the hour mark.

The effort from Joel Taylor was wayward, Liam Gibson made a crucial block before Darlow was called upon once again to deny Liam Edwards from close range.

Darlow on form, but Stoke take lead

Darlow showed the 1,413 people in attendance just why he has been in the first-team squad recently, making a superb double save to deny Shenton and Waring.

Banks, however, had other ideas and on 77 minutes he rifled his shot at goal, which the keeper couldn't keep out.

The Magpies had fought hard to hang on for so long, but the defeat was confirmed and the defeat to the Potters was the second of the season.
