It has been widely reported that Southampton are still in the market to buy more players, and manager Ronald Koeman is interested in defensive cover for his team.

Croatian centre-back Dejan Lovren left the club earlier on in the window, to join Liverpool for £20million pounds, and they could be making approaches to sign defensive replacements. Among those is Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk and Atlético Madrid's centre-back Toby Alderweireld who are both heavily linked to The Saints.

The news about a potential move has been confirmed, Celtic have asked for £8million pounds for van Dijk but it has been believed that Southampton are not willing to spend that much on him when they can get someone for a cheaper amount of money.

Southampton have made a formal approach about Alderweireld's services; and it has been reported from many different news outlets that he will join the club on a one-year loan deal at sometime today with an option to sign on a permanent deal in 2015.
