19:00 - Hey Everyone, I'm Danial Kennedy and I am going to be guiding you through Southampton's Europa League play-off against FC Midtjylland

Koeman stated before the game that he isn’t surprised by their poor defensive start to the season after significant changes to his defensive unit.

After the departures of Schneiderlin, Nathaniel Clyne and loanee Toby Alderweireld the Dutchman admitted that it is normal that they would “lose something” and that the new players need “time” in their new positions and time to “develop”.

Southampton’s striker, Long, urged his teammates to bounce back when they clash with the Danish side on Thursday. The Irish national, who was speaking to the club's official website said it was “difficult” to look at the “positives” after their defeat to Roberto Martinez’s side last Saturday.

He said that the Saints know that they’re “better than that” and have “more to offer”. Long added that it was back to the “drawing board” after Saturday and “learn” from it and the upcoming match against FC Midtjylland is an opportunity to make a “difference”.

The Danish have been less successful in Europe with 2007 been the last time that the Danish side have progressed into the group stages of the competition and have been defeated on three separate occasions in the qualifying rounds since then.

Last season was the last time that they were in the competition when they came up against the Greek side Panathinaikos in the same stage that they are currently at this campaign.

2015 UEFA Europa League Live Score Commentary

They will be hoping that the tie against the English club will go better as they were defeated 4-1 in the first leg which all but ended the tie. They came close in the home leg, but it wasn’t enough as they still went down to a 2-1 loss.

Southampton’s recent record in Europe is relatively positive, on the 13 occasions that they have played a European tie at home, they have managed seven victories, five draws and just the one defeat.

The last time that they played in Europe was back in the 2003-04, after reaching the FA Cup final the previous season they earned a place in Europe after a 20 year absence.

They were drawn against Steaua Bucharest with the home leg been the first European match to be held at the St Mary’s stadium, however, they found themselves behind after 20 minutes from Claudiu Nicu Raducanu before Kevin Phillips equalised in the second period.

The Saints battled in the second leg, but a late goal from Raducanu saw them crash out of the tournament.

Both of these clubs have never faced each other on any sort of level, however, this will not be the first time that Midtjylland have faced English opposition.

They came up against Premier League opposition in Manchester City back in 2008 in the same competition when it was under the name of the UEFA Cup.

They gave the Eastland’s club a run for their money with the tie ending 1-1 on aggregate with both sides winning the away legs 1-0. The tie went to penalties and it was keeper Joe Hart who proved the hero for the English club making two saves in the shootout with them winning 4-2.

Koeman does have some significant absentees, Jordy Clasie, who was brought in to replace Manchester United-bound Morgan Schneiderlin is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury. Steven Davis has profited through the Dutchman’s absence, but it is believed that James Ward-Prowse could be brought in.

Goalkeeper Frasier Forster is still absent with new signing Maarten Stekelenburg expected to keep his place in between the sticks as well as Florin Gardos with defender absent with a knee injury.

There are no injury concerns for Midtjylland with striker Morten Rasmussen who was rested in their last league match against Copenhagen, is tipped to earn a start on the South coast.

Their Danish opponents are a relatively new club in terms of age with FC Midtjylland only forming back in 1999.

Last season saw them win the Danish title for the first time which obviously saw them qualify for the play-off stages of the UEFA Champions League at the second-round phase.

A 3-0 victory over Lincoln Red Imps saw fans dreaming of playing the giants of the continent like the Real Madrid’s and Bayern Munich’s. However they faced a tough test against Cypriot side APOEL, they pushed their opponents to the edge but ended up on the end of a 3-1 defeat across the two legs.

Their efforts have seen them drop into the Europa League qualifiers but have been handed one of the toughest draws possible.

Unlike their hosts, they have some decent league form behind them, they are unbeaten in their first five matches of the Danish Superliga with four wins and a draw which has put them top of the table.

Saints earned their place in the qualifying stages of the competition after their excellent Premier League season last year, it was a very successful pre-season campaign for Ronald Koeman’s side putting in strong performances against the likes of Feyenoord and RCD Espanyol.

They managed to cruise the third-round qualifying stage of the competition when they took on Dutch side Vitesse.

The dominated at the St Mary’s in the first leg with goals from Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Shane Long all but ending the tie within the first 90 minutes.

Koeman’s side secured the win in the return leg at the GeIreDome with another goal from Pelle and a final one from Sadio Mane rounded a pretty impressive 5-0 aggregate score.

However their start to the Premier League season hasn’t got off to the best of starts failing to win in their opening two matches, on the opening weekend they had to come from behind to get a 2-2 draw with Newcastle United.

It got worse last Saturday in their opening home match, a Romelu Lukaku brace and another from Ross Barkley rounded off a dismal 3-0 defeat to Everton, they will be hoping that they can bounce back to winning ways on Thursday ahead of their trip to Watford on Saturday.

Premier League side Southampton are one tie away from a place in the group stages of Europa League, they will be looking to get an advantage in the first-leg on Thursday night when they take on Danish side FC Midtjylland
