Southampton captain Jose Fonte insists the Saints are not worried about facing anybody, after the South Coast side recorded their third consecutive win.

We believe nobody can score against us” were the words of the 32-year-old following the memorable victory over Manchester United.

Southampton took all three points from Old Trafford at the weekend, as they produced an organised and accomplished display with new signing Charlie Austin scoring the winner after coming off the bench for his debut in the 87th minute.

The Saints restricted the home side to just one shot on target as they defended resolutely and Fonte was thrilled with the result. He continued, saying the team would enjoy the victory with confidence "sky-high" as a result.

Following the victory Fonte praised his team-mates and their togetherness, noting that it was "a great three points and another clean sheet", which he described as "a really good effort".

European football?

Southampton are now eighth in the Premier League and nine points behind Tottenham Hotspur, who occupy fourth place.

The Saints haven't conceded a goal in their previous three games in which they took maximum points to turn their season around, and their Portuguese captain is feeling positive ahead of the rest of the season.

With this form fans will hope they can mount a serious charge for European football towards the end of the campaign.

Fonte asserted that Saints would be taking things one game at a time, adding that their priority is "to keep picking up points" and see where it can take them as the season draws to a close.

All eyes focused on Arsenal

Ronald Koeman's side are without a game next weekend after being knocked out of the FA Cup in the third round against Crystal Palace.

This means they can fully focus on their match next Tuesday, a tough tie against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Despite a difficult upcoming match against the title contenders, who have won seven of their eleven home league games this season, Fonte is not worried about the trip to North London, claiming that the visitors are "very comfortable in the system" and take confidence from that fact.

Looking forward, Fonte feels that with their current form they can finish the season strongly, but insists the South Coast side are keeping their feet on the ground for the time being.

With Fonte now forming a strong partnership Virgil Van Dijk in the Saints defence they will look to continue to progress during the rest of the season, pushing for another shot at European football.
