Southampton boss Ronald Koeman and defender Virgil Van Dijk have both been named on the January Player and Manager of the Month lists, respectively.

This is the first time this season that Koeman has been shortlisted for the award, having claimed the accolade twice last term.

Virgil Van Dijk's nomination is the first during his short time in the Premier League, and comes after a number of fantastic performances throughout the month.

A month of constant improvement

The month started of badly, with a narrow 1-0 to defeat against Norwich City at Carrow Road.

However, after that, the Saints picked up two impressive victories against Watford and West Brom at St Mary's.

Those were overshadowed by a fabulous win at Old Trafford against Manchester United, which saw the club rise to 8th in the table.

Koeman in good company for award

The other three managers nominated for the award are Manuel Pellegrini of Manchester City, West Ham's Slaven Bilic and former Southampton and current Tottenham HotspurMauricio Pochettino.

It is set to be a tightly run contest, as City picked up two wins and two draws from their four Premier League games in the month. The Hammers record two victories, a draw and a defeat after the turn of the year, while earned two wins and two draws in January to take them up to third in the table, just above London rivals Arsenal.

Van Dijk played vital role

Summer signing Van Dijk played an integral role in the three wins in the month, as the Saints reverted to a 5-3-2 formation; he was at the heart of that as the Saints turned their form around. In those three wins he made 34 clearances, 16 key interceptions, and also blocked two shots to help Saints pick up three important wins throughout the month.

The other nominees for this award are Jermain Defoe, Sergio Aguero, Roberto Firmino, Deli Alli and Kasper Schmeichel; the winner of both awards are to be announced tomorrow morning.
