Fraser Forster has admitted that he kept in contact with England manager Roy Hodgson throughout his long-term injury, but the keeper is only thinking about helping Southampton have a strong end to the season.

Southampton glad to have him back

The 27-year-old was out for ten months with a knee injury but made his comeback last month and is still yet to concede since returning to the side, bringing confidence to those in front of him.

He was particularly impressive against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night, keeping out Oliver Giroud, Alexis Sánchez and Mesut Özil on eight different occasions to help the Saints pick up a fantastic point.

That performance alone showed that he still had belief and the quality to represent England, but he faces stiff competition from Joe Hart and Jack Butland, who has been in superb form for Stoke City this season.

However, if Forster can continue with his current form into the end of the season then there is no reason why he couldn't at least give Hodgson something to think about as he picks his squad for this summer's European Championships in France.

Forster not looking too far ahead

The stopper has spoken to Hodgson but admits he's not thinking of England right now.

“I spoke to him a few times to be fair,” Forster told the Belfast Telegraph when asked if he’d heard from Hodgson. “He was always checking up on me to see how I was getting on, and always there for me if I wanted to speak to him."

Glad to be back

Forster has expressed his gratitude for all of the support and help he got from the medical staff to help him come back from such a long-term injury, and is glad to be back on the pitch doing what he loves.

“For me it is just about playing well for Southampton and enjoying football," Forster said. "I’m just delighted to be back out on the pitch and everything else is a bonus."

“Obviously the Euros is there," he continued. "But it's just a matter of playing week in, week out for Southampton and doing well, then seeing what happens."
