West Ham head to St Mary's to face Southampton on Saturday evening, with both sides heading into the game in fantastic form in the Premier League.

Last time out the Saints secured a creditable goalless draw at the Emirates against Arsenal, whereas the visitors head into the match off the back of a comfortable win against relegation threatened Aston Villa, which saw them rise to 6th place in the table - just one point behind fifth place Manchester United.

Southampton are now just one place and five points behind tomorrows opponents and know that a win against the Hammers tomorrow night will give them a huge edge in the chase to secure European football.

Forster crucial

Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster has returned to the side in the last month following long-term injury, and has played in four matches with his side winning three and drawing the other one, whilst picking up four straight clean sheets in the process.

The return of Forster has been crucial for Southampton, as he has installed so much confidence to the back four/five, and the performances of centre-back's Jose Fonte and Virgil Van Dijk have picked up massively of late.

He put in a fantastic man of the match performance against Arsenal on Tuesday, making a number of world class saves to preserve a point for the Saints. His form is also a welcome boost for England as, alongside Joe Hart and Jack Butland, they have now got three fantastic 'keeper's all in great form heading into the Euro's this summer.

Southampton unlucky in previous meeting

Southampton and the Hammers last met as recently as December, when the London club picked up a narrow 2-1 at the Boylen Ground in their last game of 2015.

Southampton were incredibly unlucky to lose on that occasion, as they completely outplayed West Ham in the first half, but were made to pay for not taking more of their chances, with Andy Carroll scoring a brace on his return from injury.

At the time you'd have made West Ham favourites for the game due to their superior form, however now that Southampton have turned their season around, you feel it could go either way.

Bearing this in mind, Saturday evening's is vitally important for both teams, as they are so close together in the table. It's a game which both want to win, but will also be desperate not to fall to defeat in because of potential consequences in the race for European football next season.

Team news

Southampton forward Charlie Austin is back from injury and is set to make his home debut for the club after joining from QPR in the January window. Austin made his official debut away against Manchester United last month, scoring a late winner.

Steven Davis is back in training following a hamstring injury and is expected to be back in the squad after missing the away trips to United and Arsenal. Matt Targett will miss out though, as he picked up a ankle injury during the week. Jay Rodriguez and Florin Gardos remain out, but are both close to returning to full training with the team.

As for the visitors, Carroll is back in training after a hamstring problem and is expected to be involved, whilst new signing Emmanuel Emineke is available and may make his Hammers debut. Angelo Ogbonna and Sam Byram could return from illness and injury respectively, but  Diafra Sakho and Manuel Lanzini are still out and won't be involved.
