Southampton's Jake Hesketh thinks that Southampton under-21's performance last night against Tottenham Hotspur leaves them with a great building block for the remainder of the season.

End of bad run

The Southampton youngsters ended a run of three defeats in succession with a draw yesterday, but Spurs midfielder and first team regular Nabil Bentaleb’s strike still earned the visitors a draw at St Mary's.

Although his side couldn't find the win, speaking to Southampton's official website, Hesketh said he feels his side "bounce[d] back" from defeat in the cup. He believes the team played "much better" and  "defended much better as a team" than in recent weeks.

Hesketh added that he feels "things are starting to click" in the team after a tough spell and now the youngster hopes they "can get a run of form going" and "get that win" they are craving.

As well as this, the player has the feeling that his side can really climb the table heading into the final stretch of the season. He recognised that the test was difficult against Spurs, as they "are a top team and they had a few first-team players playing," but this only made the performance even more impressive.

Hesketh is glad the young Saints have ended their barren run and is looking ahead to the next fixture, saying he wants them to take these positives into the match with Everton.

Stunning goal

Hesketh was on the scoresheet in the game with a superb strike that gave the Saints a second half lead - one that would be cancelled out later by Bentaleb.

Speaking about his fourth goal of the season, the player said that he "didn't see a lot on" and so he just went for goal. "As soon as I hit it," he said, "I knew it was going in."
