Youngster Jake Hesketh marked his seond first-team appearance for Southampton with a goal, as the Saints eased past Crystal Palace in the third round of the EFL Cup.

The 20-year-old also had a fantastic game and may now have earned himself a shot at some Premier League game time.

Solid performance

Crystal Palace offered little resistance last night and it turned out to be an easy victory for Southampton, but that doesn't mean there wasn't some stand out performances from the home side. Shane Long and Charlie Austin both showed their class but it was the youthful Hesketh that was the star of the show.

The academy product doubled Southampton's lead and it's fantastic to see young players getting their chance in this competition, even against top flight clubs.

Hesketh comments

Speaking after the game, Hesketh said it had been a "special" night. He also described it as a night he had "dreamt of". The midfielder has been at the club since he was a very young boy, which emphasises just how amazing last night would have been for the player.

Hesketh also praised the club in his post-match interview. He said "there isn't many other clubs", where you would get the chance to play with players you have grown up with. Hesketh says it was a good feeling to play alongside Matt Targett, who he grew up.

Speaking about the possibility of more first team football, Hesketh says '"getting a taste of it'" has made him more determined to try and cement a regular place in Claude Puel's side.

Three in a row

Last night's win means Southampton have now registered three wins in the space of a week. Anyone doubting whether Southampton could emulate last season has now seen three solid performances and three clean sheets.

Next up for Southampton is a trip to West Ham at the Olympic Stadium. Kick off is 4pm on Sunday.
