Goalkeeper Jack Butland will be hoping his performances for Stoke City this season will be rewarded with an England start against Estonia on Friday night.

Butland has already represented the senior side after Joe Hart withdrew from the England squad that faced Italy in a friendly in August 2012. He is the youngest ever England international goalkeeper at 19 years, 158 days.

However, if Roy Hodgson does name Butland in his starting 11, he will be the first Stoke player to start a competitive international for England since Mark Chamberlain in 1984.

A selection headache for Roy Hodgson

England manager Roy Hodgson has a real headache over whether to start Butland or Manchester City's Joe Hart against Estonia on Friday night.

Joe Hart has been virtually unchallenged as England's number one over the last five years and has started all eight of the Three Lions' Euro 2016 qualifiers. However, Jack Butland could be the man to challenge Hart for the number one jersey and the match against Estonia is a good opportunity to see what the Stoke goalkeeper can do in an England shirt.

Following Asmir Begovic's move to Chelsea in the summer, Jack Butland was required to step up and fill the boots of the Bosnian and so far the Englishman has been one of Stoke's star performers.

The 22-year-old has made the most saves of any Premier League goalkeeper this season (37), four more than Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul, and recorded his first clean sheet in the league against Aston Villa last weekend.

Butland has made 28 appearances for the England under-21 side, including some as captain, and at 22-years-old he is a player with big potential and a future England number one.

Joe Hart is ready for competition for number one spot

Joe Hart told The Sentinel that Butland is "more than ready" to be England's number one but he has no intention of handing him the jersey. Hart described Butland as a "fantastic" goalkeeper and added that although he is still "young", at the age of 22, he is experienced having "played a lot of games", including captaining the England under-21 side.

The Manchester City goalkeeper has been impressed with Butland's performances, with him being "one of Stoke's top players" this season. However, he added that "nothing surprises" him about Butland's performances this season, as the two have known each other since Butland was 16-years-old, when Hart was on loan at Birmingham City.

Stoke boss backs Butland to impress for England if he is given the chance

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes told The Sentinel that it is a "good opportunity" to play Butland as England have already qualified for next summer's tournament and with Butland playing "exceptionally well" for the Potters.

Hughes added that he is "not going to tell" Hodgson who to pick, but "if you want an in-form goalkeeper then Jack is certainly the one to pick."

Should Butland start for England?

Butland has been one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League this season and his performances merit a chance to show what he can do on the senior international stage.

England have already qualified for next summer's UEFA European Championships in France, therefore it is a great opportunity to give Butland a chance in the starting 11.
