Sunderland boss Gus Poyet is likely to be joined by a fellow Uruguayan in the coming days, after Atletico's Cristian Rodríguez agreed to join the North East club.

The wide player had to make do with a sparing role in Diego Simeone's Atletico side last season. This is thought to be the main reason behind Rodríguez seeking a move away from the reigning La Liga Champions. The 28-year old has previously played in France with PSG and with Porto and Benfica in Portugal - an experienced campaigner with a highly respectable pedigree, something Poyet feels his side could use in the coming season.

He told Football España: "He's desperate to be at a club where he can play week after week. There are a lot of positive things and there is something to be achieved, to agree a deal when a player like him is available."

After Fabio Borini rejected the chance to go back to Sunderland last week, Rodríguez looks set to be the man to fill the void.
