Sunderland 0-0 Leicester City: Draw enough to complete great escape for Foxes

Sunderland were held to a goalless draw at home to Leicester meaning the Foxes secured survival while Sunderland's fate will be decided at the very end of the season.

The home side probably had the better of things in the early going as they had an early penalty shout turned down after Connor Wickham went down under the challenge of Robert Huth but the referee Martin Atkinson was unmoved.

Then with around 20 minutes on the clock Sebastian Larrson nearly caught out Kasper Schmeichel with a dipping free kick from the left which the keeper did well to get down and parry away after he may have been expecting a cross.

Leicester's only real chance of the first half came soon after when a scramble ensued in the Sunderland box from a corner which eventually led to a Jamie Vardy shot being blocked from six yards as Costel Pantilimon did not assert himself enough in goal.

The best chance of the half fell to Sunderland's Danny Graham after he was picked out by a wonderful chipped ball from Lee Catermole on the left side of the box but the striker volleyed straight at Schmeichel.

The second half was a scrappy affair for the most part with the game picking up a bit in the last 25 minutes as Sunderland pushed for a victory they needed a lot more than the visitors. First Patrick Van Aanholt fired one across the face of goal and just wide from the edge of the box before substitute Adam Johnson produced a fine near post save out of Schmeichel from 20 yards after he cut in from the right.

Out of nowhere Leicester could have nicked it at the end as uncertainty at the back between John O'Shea and Pantilimon let Jamie Vardy put the pressure on before the ball broke to Kramaric a bit deeper but his first time effort was tame and went well wide of the empty goal. A point a piece was a fair result really as neither side did enough to win but Leicester the happier as they have sealed safety before the end.
