Sunderland have signed DeAndre Yedlin on loan, the club have confirmed.

Yedlin joins the Black Cats from Tottenham Hotspur for the 2015-16 season as Dick Advocaat looks to bolster his defence after a poor start to the new campaign.

Full-back has heard good things about the club

The 22-year-old American international told Sunderland's official website that he is "delighted" with the switch and to be granted "the opportunity to play for a club with such great history."

Yedlin revealed that he has "heard fantastic things" about the Black Cats and their fans from Claudio Reyna, who won over 100 caps for the USA and spent two years with Sunderland between 2001 and 2003, as well as Jozy Altidore, his international teammate who left Wearside in January as part of the move that broguht Jermain Defoe to the club.

He continued, saying that Reyna also "speaks very highly of Dick Advocaat," the two having spent time together at Rangers.

Yedlin to finally get opportunities in a poor Sunderland defence

The right-back signed for Spurs after impressing at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, joining up with his teammates in North London at the beginning of this year after finishing 2014 on loan with Seattle Sounders, from whom he joined the Premier League side.

However, he has been afforded few chances to impress since, having to wait until April to make his debut in a defeat to Aston Villa, which remains his only appearance for the club.

Yet, with Sunderland struggling for quality and depth in the full-back areas, Yedlin is bound to get opportunities with his temporary club.

Billy Jones appears to have resisted competition from new signing Adam Matthews to nail down the right-back position, but now that Matthews is injured for six weeks, Advocaat recognised the need for another player in this area of the park - whilst Yedlin could even challenge left-back Patrick van Aanholt for his starting berth, who has come under great scrutiny for his performances so far this season.
