It has been revealed that former-Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson is not in contention for the Sunderland job.

Number of candidates for Black Cats job

Rumours surfaced earlier on Wednesday that Sunderland sporting director Lee Congerton had opened talks with the former Newcastle assistant. Pearson was sacked by the Foxes at the end of June despite keeping the club in the top flight of English football.

However, those rumours were played down as Pearson is one of many names that have been drawn up after the resignation of Dick Advocaat at the weekend after their 2-2 draw with West Ham United.

Sam Allardyce the favourite

Pearson isn't believed to be even at the top of the Wearside clubs wish list with former West Ham and Newcastle United manager considered the favourite. Allardyce is the favourite despite his supposed cautiousness to return to managing so soon after exiting the Boleyn Ground at the end of last season.

Dyche, Redknapp and Moyes rule themselves out

A number of coaches have ruled themselves out of the picture with Burnley’s Sean Dyche also considered as one of the favourites who wrote himself off at the weekend, both Harry Redknapp and David Moyes also voiced their disinterest of making the move to the north-east.

Advocaat’s departure

It has been a busy week for the Wearside after Advocaat ended his seven month tenure after the weekend, goals from Steven Fletcher and Jeremain Lens gave the Dutchman hope but losing the two-goal lead proved to be the final nail in the coffin.

Since his departure he has revealed that he didn’t fancy another relegation battle and that he had already made his decision to leave “last week” and was asked to take over the weekend’s match to end “in style”.

He went on to say that the struggle against relegation was not his “cup of tea” and he felt that it was time that “someone else” took over.

Sunderland will be hoping that they will have a man in charge before their clash with West Brom on October 17 with kick-off at 3PM BST.
