Jermain Defoe is expected to be fit for Stoke City's visit to Sunderland this weekend, according to Sky Sports.

The England international was the match winner in the Black Cats' 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace on Monday night, but he was unable to complete the full 90 minutes after going over on his ankle, which forced him to be withdrawn, with Danny Graham his replacement.

However, Defoe was positive about the knock in his post-match interview with Sky Sports, and now it has been reported that he will be fit for the clash with the Potters on Saturday afternoon.

Defoe avoids serious blow

Speaking after Monday's win, the striker was upbeat about the injury that forced him off, saying he was hopeful of being in contention on Saturday after working so hard to be "sharp" again - which has clearly helped after he scored the winner.

"I can put weight on it," the striker said after the game as he appeared positive about the problem.

"I just hope it's not ligaments," he added, and it seems that it in fact is not, meaning the damage is not as serious as first feared and that he should be able to play at the weekend.

Sunderland also dodge big blow

The news will come as a huge relief for Sunderland and their fans, with Defoe having given his team all three points last time out with an 80th minute effort at Selhurst Park.

Rumours have emerged suggesting that the striker could be on his way out of the Stadium of Light in January, with him frustrated at his lack of playing time, but he proved his worth on Monday and should earn more minutes as a result.

Also, Sam Allardyce appears to have finally sussed the 3-5-2 set-up, following earlier failings in the 6-2 defeat at Everton, and Defoe is key in the team for the system to work.
