Steven Fletcher has been backed by former Marseille players Joey Barton and Tony Cascarino to succeed at the Ligue 1 club.

The 28-year-old moved to the French giants from Sunderland on transfer deadline day.

Sunderland let players leave during the course of the transfer window in a bid free up the wage bill and Fletcher was one of the players who departed.

He will now spend the rest of the season in France.

Fletcher was ineligible to play against Montpellier on Tuesday but the Scotland striker is expected to make his debut against Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday.

Striker tipped for success

Barton, who played for Marseille on loan during the 2012-13 campaign, has tipped Fletcher to hit the ground running as long as the circumstances are right.

“Steven Fletcher can maybe be a good idea for OM but for that to happen he has to be given the right service from the midfield," the former Newcastle United man told Le Phoceen.

He added, “In any case, Steven is good enough for the French league - he can be an interesting player."

Cascarino confident in Fletcher's ability

Cascarino played for the club between 1994 and 1996 and scored an impressive 61 goals.

The former Republic of Ireland striker, like Barton, also feels Fletcher can be a success in the south of France.

He described Fletcher as a ‘goal scorer’ and a ‘good footballer’.

The latter was also seen as not having ‘very strong points’ although Cascarino also felt he had no ‘weaknesses’ either.

“He’s good at holding the ball up and very accurate in the penalty box. He’s a good footballer, who I saw at his best when he played alongside another striker," he commented.

In order for Fletcher to be a hit at Marseille, Cascarino feels the forward needs ‘quick players’ around him and players who provide plenty of ‘movement’.
