Southampton's loanee centre-back Toby Alderweireld, who they brought in previously at the start of the season from La Liga champions Atlético Madrid, has dropped a huge hint about his not-too-distant future; stating that he wants to link up with Belgian compatriot Jan Vertonghen again, and is happy to stay in the Premier League.

The 26-year-old defender has flourished in England following his loan switch on transfer deadline day, which was a surprise in itself given how quickly the deal was finalised despite there being barely any transfer rumours surrounding his future beforehand. Tottenham Hotspur are amongst many clubs in the Premier League alone who are believed to be interested in Alderweireld's services for the future, after his loan spell is completed at the end of the season in the middle of May.

Premier League leaders Chelsea are ready to strengthen their defensive options with John Terry's future still uncertain, and Gary Cahill's inconsistent form over the past few months just two problems at Stamford Bridge defensively. Defending champions Manchester City are reportedly interested too, unsurprisingly - having only kept three clean sheets in their past 13 league matches.

The Saints have a £6.8million pound option to sign Alderweireld at the end of the current season, but if Atlético know that there is sufficient interest, they may be tempted to buy the option clause for £1.5million pounds and sell the Belgian to the highest bidder. For a player of Alderweireld's ability, £6,8million is an absolute steal, so there is no reason why other clubs will not try and swoop for him in the summer - taking advantage of So'ton's lack of financial strength compared to European powerhouses and sign him.

Alderweireld himself had this to say: "I would like to play with Jan Vertonghen again. But a transfer will be arranged later, not now. Atlético will decide my future, but I would like to stay in the Premier League. That some of the big clubs show interest proves I'm doing well.
