Emmanuel Adebayor seems to be Tim Sherwood's first choice to replace Christian Benteke, who seems to be very close to making a move to Liverpool.

Benteke's £32.5 million release clause has reportedly been met by the Merseyside club, making the deal imminent. Should this move go through Villa would be without their first choice forward who has scored them 42 goals in 88 games, including a spell of 12 goals in 13 games at the end of last season.

Sherwood keen on reuniting with Adebayor

Sherwood was crucial to this reinvigoration of Benteke towards the end of last season, affecting him in a similar way as to how he motivated Adebayor the previous season at White Hart Lane. This was undeniably crucial in their fight for survival.

Now that it seems Benteke won't be lining up at Villa Park next season, the Daily Mail claim that Sherwood is keen on reuniting with Spurs outcast Adebayor.

Under Sherwood, Adebayor scored 11 goals in 20 appearances propelling Spurs to a fifth place finish.

Difficult 2014/15 season

However, this form didn't extend under Mauricio Pochettino, and following a poor run of form during which he only scored twice, Adebayor was dropped for the up and coming forward Harry Kane.

He made a few performances towards the end of last season but was booed repeatedly by his own fans who were clearing tired and frustrated with his attitude on the pitch.

This distaste, lack of form and huge wage demands has led him to become unwanted by all in the Tottenham hierarchy, and Daniel Levy is keen to sell him for a fee of £5 million.

Sherwood's previous effect on Adebayor could make this signing a coup for Villa, however given the players lacking reliability it represents an enormous risk and one which the Aston Villa hierarchy are taking very seriously.
