Sky Italia are reporting that Spurs are strongly interested in Mario Suarez, and that they have contacted the midfielder's current club Atletico Madrid over his availability.

Spurs have already sold Paulinho and Etienne Capoue, and look set to sell Benjamin Stambouli to Paris Saint Germain in the coming days, seriously depleting their depth in central midfield.

Hence, Mauricio Pochettino is clearly keen to bring in alternative selections to Nabil Bentaleb, Ryan Mason and Moussa Dembele, who shared between them the bulk of the playing time last season.

A tough tackling midfielder like Suarez would be an ideal acquisition, as it would provide further cover and ease the pressure on the Spurs back four who were often very shaky last term.

However, Pochettino's preference of raising and improving younger players makes this deal seem unlikely, given that Suarez is 28 years old. Furthermore, Spurs will face serious competition for his signature, with free spending Serie A side Inter Milan reportedly very keen on him.

The midfielder, capped three times by Spain, made 34 appearances for Atletico last season, scoring twice. Despite this, his long-term future has been brought into question, following his exclusion from several big games in La Liga last season, which demonstrated a lack of trust in the Spaniard by manager Diego Simeone.

According to TransferMarkt, Suarez's market value is currently at £7 million, making this, potentially, a very affordable deal for Tottenham, especially consider ring Daniel Levy's unwillingness to splash out on players like he did in the summer of 2013.

Spurs have already bought three players  this summer, all defenders, whilst they've also sold two central midfielders and club captain Younes Kaboul. However, the departure of Benjamin Stambouli seems imminent, with Roberto Soldado, Vlad Chiriches and Emmanuel Adebayor, all strongly linked with moves away from White Hart Lane.

Although Suarez's age may see Spurs' interest diminish, a player of his ilk is certainly required at White Hart Lane to provide Mauricio Pochettino with adequate depth in midfield.
