A thrilling, Tottenham dominated game saw the North London club climb to second in the league thanks to a Kieran Trippier goal.

Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes was the busiest of the two goalkeepers for the majority of the game, as Watford saw one-way traffic dictated by their hosts.

Wasteful Tottenham

Tottenham saw 26 shots at goal throughout the game but it took them until the 64th minute to grab a goal.

Tottenham’s first chance of the game came came in the seventh minute when Harry Kane was held back by Nathan Ake as he ran through on goal. Kane attempted to chip the ball past ex-Spur Gomes, however it was an easy save for the 'keeper.

The hosts then came close again when a header from Nacer Chadli's header drifted wide due to a deflection. Moments later, the White Hart Lane outfit won a corner, which was pushed wide. The ball fell to Mousa Dembele from a corner who's powerful shot fell wide of the goal.

Ben Davies troubled Watford twice in succession as a deflected shot hit the side netting before a low shot moments later was pushed weakly away by Gomes.

One of Tottenham's best chances came when a free kick from Erik Lamela found an unmarked Nacer Chadli and so gifting him a free header. The Belgian didn't connect well, resulting in it over the bar and into the Spurs crowd.

Watford saw their first shot at goal as Hugo Lloris was caught off his line but an attempt to chip the ball over him into the goal landed on the roof of the net, thanks to the wind.

The ball was quickly back in the visitor's end as Davies took another shot from the left but Gomes's save managed to push the ball past the post and off the pitch.

A little later a long pass from Eric Dier put through Harry Kane who attempted to poke the ball past Gomes from 12 yards but ended up poking it over the goal.

Trippier scores the important goal

Tottenham earned their well deserve goal on the 64th minute. Kane flicked through to Dembele at the half way line. The Belgian made a great run down the left before linking up with Dele Alli. His low cross was smashed into the back of the net by the onrushing Trippier.

The full-back was constantly threatening throughout the game and the goal was a good reward for his efforts. Trippier constantly made runs and put crosses into the box, linking up well with Chadli.

Ben Davies threatened Watford on numerous occasions, on the opposition flank. At the half hour mark he looked to have scored as his shot was deflected into the side netting.

The Welshman then came close moments later again as his shot was saved by Gomes. The Brazilian got little on the save and was left on the ground; had someone been on the rebound, Tottenham would have been a further goal in front.

Watford hardly troubled Tottenham

The second half saw Watford have more of the ball as striker Troy Deeney came on at half time. However, the majority of their counter attacks resulted in Tottenham being saved by the offside flag.

Watford then attempted to level the score as Odion Ighalo and Deeney linked up around the Tottenham box but the Spurs defence never looked troubled.

The result leaves Tottenham in second as Manchester City lost 3-1 to leaders Leicester. Meanwhile, Watford are left in 10th.
