Tottenham Hotspur went into the 2015-16 Premier League season with the aim of trying to qualify for the Champions League

The season turned into something more special for Spurs as they had met their aim quite convincingly and would go on to challenge Leicester City right up until the last few games of the season.

The amount of work that the team went through though caused them to finish the season poorly and finish below bitter rivals Arsenalsomething that hurts a lot.

Finishing third though should still be seen as a hugely successful season as they will now go straight into the Champions League next year.

Over the season, there were quite a few players who stood up and put in some great performances for the club. So who were the contenders to be the player of the season for Spurs?

Harry Kane

Harry Kane has had yet another amazing season for Spurs scoring 25 goals in 38 appearances in the Premier League. It was said by many people that Kane was a one season wonder but he showed this wasn't the case and he has developed himself into a great striker. Kane didn't even have the best of starts to the season but when he got going he was unplayable. The striker overall in all competitions scored 31 goals in 50 appearances for Spurs, therefore, leading their charge in more than one competition. It was unfortunate for Kane that Spurs couldn't win the title but he will go again next season and try and win the golden boot for a second successive season.

Dele Alli

Dele Alli has had a remarkable rise at Spurs and had a fantastic first season with the club in the Premier League. The midfielder scored 10 goals plus laid on nine assists for teammates to show how great of a season he had. Alli, signed from MK Dons, has come into the Spurs team looking like he has been in the Premier League for many years. Alli's fantastic performances have seen him become a regular in the England national team. The midfielder scored a remarkable goal at Selhurst Park against Crystal Palace that had everyone raving about how good he can be. Alli's quality has shone through and he has developed a good understanding with Kane during the season which made the team really good for large periods of the season.

Toby Alderweireld

Toby Alderweireld was signed by Spurs in the summer from Atletico Madrid and what a signing he proved to be over the season. Alderweireld was part of a great partnership with Jan Vertonghen during the season with Spurs keeping 13 clean sheets. Alderweireld though also weighed in with four goals including one recently in Spurs 3-0 demolition of Manchester United in April. The Belgian defender players 50 games in all competitions during the season for Spurs and was a key component for the team as he took control from the back and also produced two assists with his fantastic range of passing that he possesses.

Christian Eriksen

Another outstanding candidate for player of the season is Christian Eriksen who has been key in  taking Spurs forward this season to be challenging for the Premier League. Eriksen has been a key component for the team scoring six goals in the league as well as getting 13 assists. Eriksen also has a very good understanding with Kane which has lead to the team being very good when it comes to scoring goals. The Danish midfielder scored an important winner at the Etihad Stadium against Manchester City during the season which gave the whole team the confidence to keep going in the title race. Overall Eriksen has now settled really well into the Premier League and next season he will be a very important part of the team when they go into the Champions League as well as challenging for the Premier a league once again.

Hugo Lloris

Hugo Lloris once again had a brilliant season for Spurs keeping 13 clean sheets and showed why he is so important to the team. Lloris is an authoritative figure for Spurs and in important games showed his importance to the team making so many crucial saves. Lloris only conceded 35 goals in 38 games which is the joint best in the league with only David de Gea able to match him at United.

Player of the season

Looking at the contenders it was a close call to make but because of his overall contribution to the team, Harry Kane is VAVEL's Spurs player of the season. The saying goes that goals win you games and Kane got plenty of them and in the key moments he came forward for his team to keep them in games whenever they didn't play well.
