Harry Kane scored the only goal of the game as Tottenham Hotspur edged to a 1-0 win at home to Sunderland, recovering well from their midweek disappointment against AS Monaco.
Adnan Januzaj was sent off for a second yellow late on in the game, which Tottenham were the better side for much of, the only disappointment for Mauricio Pochettino being the number of injuries his side picked up in the second half, goalscorer Kane leaving the pitch on a stretcher.
The Argentine boss had sprung a surprise with his team selection, Eric Dier at centre-back as Jan Vertonghen moved across to left-back in place of Ben Davies, whilst David Moyes went for a fairly defensive XI, aimed at stifling the hosts.
Jordan Pickford was again selected in goal, thrust into action early on from Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min crossing after getting the better of Jason Denayer, something that would become a theme of the afternoon.
Pickford endures a busy day
Kane went close again soon after, swivelling well inside the box only for Pickford to be quick off his line to close the striker down, but it didn't bode well for Sunderland.
Jermain Defoe looked to make an impact at the other end, firing a shot straight at Hugo Lloris, however the Sunderland goal was still being peppered, Son hitting the post after cutting inside nicely onto his right foot.
Sunderland came the closest that they would all game on the stroke of half-time, Didier Ndong linking well with Defoe to force the ball across for Steven Pienaar, who watched on in agony as his effort was swept off the line by Kyle Walker.
Despite that set-back, Spurs continued to probe as the game entered the second half, Son still shining as he sent a fantastic ball across the penalty area, to no avail as no other Lilywhite shirt could get onto the end of it.
Kane gifted opening goal
It didn't matter, as Son watched Kane give his side the lead just short of the hour mark. They'd shown some good quality attacking previously in the game, but the goal was all of Sunderland's doing, Papy Djilobodji somehow failing to clear in the area, presenting marksman Kane with an easy finish from five yards out.
Seeing Spurs open the scoring didn't act as a catalyst for any Sunderland improvement, Pickford still the most active man for the visitors, keeping Dele Alli out before his save of the day came from an Erik Lamela shot, tipping the ball around the post after the substitute had unleashed a dangerous curler.
Injuries threaten to derail joy
The day was hampered for the home side as first Mousa Dembele was taken off with what looked like a knock, before Kane's day ended on a stretcher as he complained of ankle issues. Eric Dier and Kyle Walker looked in discomfort at times too, with a nervy 24 hours for Pochettino coming up.
Still though, it was the three points that Spurs wanted, and three points is what they got. Sunderland are still in search of their first Premier League win this season, and judging by the quality of their attacking at White Hart Lane, the search could continue for some time yet.
The search will go on without Adnan Januzaj, for the time being, the midfielder facing a three match ban after being sent off for a second yellow card late on in the day.
