Watford FC have today announced that club captain Troy Deeney has signed a new five year deal with the club, keeping him at Vicarage Road until 2020.

Club legend

Deeney signed for Watford in 2010 from Walsall in a £500,000 deal, meaning that his new contract could bring him up to a decade down south, meaning he'd have a testimonial.

During his time at the club, Deeney has scored 77 goals in 205 games, becoming something of a fan favourite, whilst gaining the captaincy from Manuel Almunia when the goalkeeper left at the start of last season.

His role was just as significant last year, as Deeney registered 21 goals in 43 appearances, helping Watford to promotion to the Premier League.

Next season

Hornets fans will be hoping that he can lead them to survival this season, as the battle the odds to have a strong first season back in England's top division.

The striker's first chance to make an impact in the new season will come against Everton on the opening day, a game to be played at Goodison Park. Watford's first home game comes a week later, as they play host to West Brom.

However, there is some debate as to how much football Deeney will actually play next season. Manager Quique Sánchez Flores often employed a two striker system last season, which supported Deeney.

With the more difficult task of Premier League football coming up, it could be suggested that Flores might revert to a five man midfield in order to help protect the defence - which could see Deeney drop to the the middle of the park.

This comes after Watford confirmed the signing of Udinese striker Matej Vydra, who joined permanently after two loan spells at the club. He'll be hoping for a place in the team himself, having scored 36 goals in 83 games for the club.
