Despite his recent troubles in failing to sign Atletico Madrid's Thomas Partey, Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores is not stopping there with his search to bolster the Hornets' ranks.

Next on his list is Fiorentina's defensive midfielder Mario Suarez, and Sky Sports have reported the Spaniard could be close to securing his signature.

A Spanish connection

Suarez, born in Alcobendas, Madrid, was a product of Atletico's youth system and rose through the ranks. However, after playing out on loan for a couple of seasons, he moved on to sign for RCD Mallorca, signing a contract that included a four-year buyout clause for Atletico.

This clause was activated two seasons later, as Suarez returned to the Rojiblancos, and he remained with them for five campaigns, making over 100 appearances. Flores knows him from his time managing Atletico, and is familiar with the attributes that Suarez could bring to his Watford side, who have started their season positively and now sit ninth in the Premier League table on 29 points.

Lack of impact

Suarez, who moved to Serie A club Fiorentina in the summer of 2015, has failed to make an impact for the Gigliati this season, making just four appearances and netting once.

He has already been told he can leave the club, and reports suggest that he would prefer a move to England. Other clubs are keen on Suarez's signature, however, with Ligue 1 side Marseille one of the interested parties alongside Watford.

The 28-year-old would be a valuable addition to Flores' Watford side as they look to push the initiative in the Premier League over the course of the second-half of the season. His experience - including helping Atletico to a Champions League final in 2014 - would be invaluable for a squad that are eager and ambitious to achieve more.
