Watford Fc have announced that they will embark on a week-long training camp in Austria.
The trip will serve as valuable time that new hornets head coach hornets head coach Walter Mazzarri can use to step up pre-season preparations. It will also provide the Italian with the perfect opportunity to integrate new signings such as Isaac Success and Jerome Sinclair into his squad.
As part of the trip the Premier League side will take part in friendly fixtures against Russian and German opposition. The first of these games will be against Union Berlin at 6pm local time on Tuesday 19 July. The side from the German capital compete in the domestic second division where they finished mid table last term. The match will take place in 2,300 capacity Santa Andre stadium in the small Austrian town of the same name.
The second fixture will see Mazzarri’s men take on former wannabe Russian super power Anzhi in the village of Gralla at the Sportplatz Gralla.
Anzhi's European pedigree
Anzhi will be familiar to English supporters including Watford thanks to their European exploits of recent seasons. In the 2013-14 Europa league# a team with star names such as Willian and Samuel Eto’o defeated Liverpool in the last 32.
Then in the following round two time interim Chelsea coach Guus Hiddink took his side to St James Park to take on Newcastle United. A Papiss Cisse goal in the 90th minute of the second leg gave the Geordies a 1-0 aggregate win and a quarter final spot against Benfica.
The announcement of these two games comes off the back of the news that Watford will welcome French side Lorient to Vicarage Road on 6 August. This game takes place exactly a week before Watford travel down to the south coast to take on Claude Puel’s Southampton at St Mary’s to kick off the new Premier League season.
