Watford head coach Walter Mazzarri was visibly distraught after his side’s lacklustre display as they were sent crashing out of the EFL Cup at the hands of League One side Gillingham.

Midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure admitted after the game that the head coach did not speak to any of the players in the changing room after the defeat.

Italian apologises to fans about performance

The Hornets boss was not happy with the side’s mentality as they became content to rest on their laurels after they took a 1-0 lead in the tie.

And he didn’t speak to the side after the match as he is still searching for his first win since taking over the Watford helm this summer.

“He said nothing. I think he’s disappointed like the players." Doucoure said after the match." He’s not spoken,”

“He came in but he didn’t speak. Nobody talked and we’re all disappointed about the result so we didn’t speak.”

Head coach Mazzarri admitted he was “massively disappointed” with the way his side played, especially for the fans who “don’t deserve” to see the side lose in such a manner.

Defeat needs to be put right

The Italian took over the side from former manager Quique Sanchez Flores, but has added his input with the head coach about to add his eighth summer signing in the coming days.

Daryl Janmaat is set to arrive for a medical in the next 24 hours after the two clubs agreed a £7.5 million fee.

However, the Hornets are still looking for their first competitive win under Mazzarri and Arsenal is next up at the weekend when league action returns..

The Hornets will welcome the Gunners to Vicarage Road, and the Italian will be demanding a better display from his side to amend Tuesday night’s display.

It is not just the manager who wants improvement, with Doucoure adding: “Tomorrow we will talk with each other and look at the mistakes we made tonight.”
