It was an afternoon to forget for West Ham United in a day which had so much promise as they lost 4-2 at home to Watford.
New signing Simone Zaza was available for the first time, as was Manuel Lanzini and of course, their talisman, Dimitri Payet.
The home side got off to a flyer when Dimitri Payet's corner was met by the head of Michail Antonio and guided into the far corner. The winger again justifying his call up to the national team last week. Things got better for the Hammers when Payet picked the ball up on the right side, took on his man and produced an amazing rabona cross which again landed to Antonio and he then couldn't miss. It was beginning to look like it was going to be a long afternoon for Watford.
Watford got themselves back in it when Odion Ighalo cut inside from the left and fired a shot which deflected off of James Collins then wrong footed Adrian. Shortly after, just on the stroke of half time, Watford were level. Troy Deeney took advantage of a lack of communication from Adrian and Collins and produced a very good finish, lobbing the 'keeper and into the far corner.
The second half was all about Watford. West Ham were really stunned when the ball fell to Etienne Capoue in the area and he finished it excellently, Adrian got a hand to it but he couldn't prevent it hitting the back of the net. The away side really rubbed salt into the wounds ten minutes later when Jose Holebas struck one from the edge of the box which should really have been saved by Adrian as he got a strong hand to it, but it ended up in the net and West Ham were falling to pieces.
Watford later had a goal disallowed for offside but apart from that, the game didn't have too many other significant events. West Ham continue their dull start to the season.
Goalkeeper and defence
Adrian (4) - It was a horrid afternoon for the Spaniard. He was at fault for the second and fourth goal. He didn't communicate enough with his back four and really should have saved the fourth goal. If he gives many more of those sorts of performances in the coming weeks then he will surely be dropped.
Sam Byram (5) - Every goal that was scored was from his side. Although he wasn't directly involved in them, his positioning and defensive work needs to be a lot better. He wasn't the worst but it was still a disappointing afternoon for him.
James Collins (4) - Again, he was at fault for the first two goals. The first one maybe a little harsh to put all the blame on him but it was him who the ball deflected off of. The second goal was a horror show at the back. You don't expect to see that in Sunday league, let alone in the Premier League.
Winston Reid (5) - Wasn't as bad as his defensive partner, but he was still well under par. He made a couple of vital interceptions but apart from that, he gave the forwards too much time and looked a little bit lost.
Arthur Masuaku (6) - The only one at the back who deserved a little bit of praise. In the first half he prevented Ighalo from tapping home from a couple of yards and also started the move off which ended in that stunning assist by Payet. He went on some good runs and created opportunities but he was sometimes vulnerable when defending.
Midfield and Attack
Mark Noble (5) - Was quite non existent for most of the match. Had his moments but he wasn't creative enough when on the ball. Again, he wasn't the worst but he wont want to dwell on the game.
Cheikhou Kouyate (5) - A performance which we are not used to seeing from the midfielder. He is usually so involved all over the pitch but he looked isolated and without support. He is vital when he is on form so they will be hoping that he can forget today and go again next week.
Manuel Lanzini (7) - He showed in the first half an hour especially how much West Ham have missed him. He has got that attacking flare that they need and he is so confident on the ball. He gave the Watford defence problems and his rating would have been higher if he kept it up all game.
Dimitri Payet (7) - His return was craved amongst the supporters and the club and he produced moments of class. It will be hard to top that rabona assist anywhere for the whole season and he got another assist when his corner was met by Antonio. He wasn't at his brilliant best but it was encouraging.
Michail Antonio (8) - The bright spark on a horrid day for West Ham. He was beating defenders with ease, creating opportunities and scored two goals. His importance to this side is growing every week and his international call up was so deserved. It's a shame that the result put a damper on his performance.
Simone Zaza (6) - He looked bright in the opening stages and was really holding the ball up well. But as was for most of the squad, his level dropped throughout the game and he wasn't able to make a big impact. He does look like he will be a good addition to Slaven Bilic's side though.
Substitutes
Jonathan Calleri (5) - He hasn't had a great start to his West Ham career and he continued that. Made no impact on the game when West Ham were chasing a goal and even missed a header from a few yards out, luckily his blushes were spared when it was offside anyway.
Ashley Fletcher (6) - Was brought on when West Ham were chasing two goals and showed a lot of urgency. He was eager to get on the ball but it just wasn't happening in the end.
Gokhan Tore (5) - Came on with time running out so he didn't have any time to make anything happen. Watford were running the clock down and West Ham just wanted the final whistle.
