It was an ecsatic European night for Perth side St. Johnstone after they defeated Norwegian side Rosenborg 2-1 on aggregate on Thursday evening. Last week's 1-0 victory in Scandinavia proved to be decisive as the sides drew one a piece on the night at McDiarmid Park. It was only manager Tommy Wright's second consecutive match in charge of the Saintees after taking over from friend and former colleague Steve Lomas.

St Johnstone conceded early on after a strike from Norwegian international Alexander Soderlund which levelled the tie. Just moments later though, Stevie May fired the Saintees back into the lead after lobbing an on-rushing goalkeeper, much to the delight of the home support.

It was a long second half for St. Johnstone but they managed to hold on and will go into the next qualifying round where they will meet Belarusian minnows FC Minsk.

It was a disastrous night for Hibernian in the Scottish capital as they aimed to overturn a 2-0 deficit against Swedish club Malmo. Pat Fenlon's team - who gained their place in the qualifiers as runners up of the Scottish cup - were defeated 7-0 at Easter Road after an abysmal showing in front of a sell-out crowd, many of whom left before the interval as their team trailed by four.

A 9-0 mauling denies the Hibees a tie against Swansea City in the next round. However Motherwell, who were second only to Celtic in the SPL last season, will look to book their place in the tournament, the only thing standing in their way is Russian club FC Kuban Krasnodar.
