Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel flew during the final qualifying session as he took a surprising, yet dominant pole ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix.

At the other end of the pit lane however Mercedes will be wondering how they were so far off the pace they shocked the Formula One world and they missed out on the front row for this first time in 15 months.

Mercedes Off The Pace

In truth Mercedes were never really close to race pace. They struggled all weekend. Ferrari were rarely troubled by the Brackley team and even the previously dismal Red Bull never really looked worried.

Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg could only manage fifth and sixth respectively in a distinctly average qualifying session. It could have been worse for the Silver Arrows however as Toro Rosso rookie Max Verstappen was on course to finish ahead of the two Mercedes drivers, they were saved though by a mistake from the Dutch driver on the final corner.

Resurgent Red Bull

This isn't a recap of the 2013 season, Red Bull really are battling with Ferrari while Mercedes lag a fair way back. Dietrich Mateschitz's team have been showing their newfound pace all weekend and may already be regretting their announcement to ditch the Renault powerunit. The powerunit may have stuggled throughout the rest of the season, but it certainly showed up at F1's only night race.

Red Bull's new found speed was demonstrated emphatically in qualifying as Daniel Ricciardo took the last spot on the front row as he claimed 2nd while Daniil Kvyat also ensured Red Bull had a spot on the second row aswell, as he took 4th.

Apart from just positional advantage the speed advantage was clearly shown by the time difference, Ricciardo's best lap time was a shade under a second quicker than Hamilton's best time.

No Dream Debut For Rossi

After being handed his first ever F1 race seat by the stuggling Manor team, many hoped that Alexander Rossi could deliver on his potential after such a successful GP2 series so far.

However a crash late on Practice 1 left him struggling to just to even set a time in Practice 2. The American driver never really recovered from his early struggles and he finished dead last, over half a second behind his team-mate.
