England fans came, they saw, they hoped and now they leave to hope again.

Sport is ultimately about triumphs, success built on belief and restraint at key moments and unfortunately Roy's boys were not able to deliver either.

Apology announcements from Joe Hart and Wayne Rooney coupled with support for Roy Hodgson at least show where England's pride lies.

Had John Terry and Ashley Cole brought their Champions League and big tournament experience to the table and been included in the squad would Suarez and Balotelli have been curbed? Possibly so but the reality is that hope was chosen above all else.

The blind belief that young players would deliver but unfortunately they didn't and it was an in-experienced back four without a true defensive leader that let England down.

Long gone are the days of England's vocal and tough defenders, the Tony Adams, Gareth Southgate, Sol Campbell types who were leaders and then they were footballers.

Once again England turn to extending this line of hope because in all honesty that''s all they have.

Young players who offer a chance to believe of a better tomorrow, or in this case a more successful Euro 2016.

Lampard, Gerrard, possibly Glen Johnson will have played their last tournaments.

Now its the era of Stones, Flanagan, Barkley, Walcott, Sterling and Kelly.

Roy Hodgson should remain at the English helm so he can at least mould these players into a formidable attacking combined with a  coherent defensive unit.

I feel that hope in this case may prevail. Two years from now these players will know how to deal with a Suarez or Balotelli.

Top class strikers make good defenders look average and scared. However top class defenders can make decent strikers look limited and clueless. When four average defenders communicate, lead and work together they can make an entire opposition attack look blunt and broken. Now is the time to gel and lead.

It's an opportunity to focus on enhancing the fluidity of the English attack of which we saw such proimising glimpses. Couple this with a more stern focus on commanding a defensive line and hope may yet prevail.

Hodgson has to do this because no one else will offer a better solution, no one else knows these players better  or understands their frailties and potential.

No one else has the big team experience and passion for this role.

Do you really think as English supporters that a Pardew, Bruce, Pulis or Neville is going to wave a Harry Potter wand and hey presto you are tournament winners.

Hodgson is it. Stand behind him, support Rooney and Co. and give Hodgson the tools to aim for a Euro 2016 semi final berth.

Switzerland, Estonia and Slovenia should prove adequate opposition to whittle out the limitations of England's new generation.

As for the next captain, Rooney has shown he can lead however Gary Cahill for me could be one to look.

In the mean time keep calm and keep hoping on.
