Many were looking forward to this high profile Group G clash. Two quality sides who have had classics encounters in the past. Who can forget their meeting in the 2006 World Cup? Unfortunately for some, history was not to repeat itself.

The game started well for Portugal, who were certainly the better team in the first eight minutes. They carved out three half-chances but failed to test Manuel Neuer. Their initial form was not to last as the referee made his first mark. In the 12th minute, Mario Gotze made his way into the box and was physically outmuscled by Joao Pereira. The referee awarded a non-existent penalty and changed the game. Thomas Muller buried the spot kick and gave Germany the lead.

After Nani spurned a golden opportunity to equalize, Germany punished them on the other end. Mats Hummels rose above Pepe from a corner to nod Germany into a two goal lead.

Two minutes later the referee was at it again, as he put the final nail in Portugal's coffin. Muller over-dramatized a fall and that aggravated Pepe. In his rage, Pepe confronted Muller and pushed his head into the German. The referee showed a straight red for the Real Madrid man, as Portugal went down to ten men. Although Muller's theatrics were childish and disgraceful, Pepe should have kept his cool.

On the brink of half time, being a man down finally cost Portugal. Germany strode into the offensive third, and a terrible piece of defending from Bruno Alves gifted Muller his second.

Coming back from the half time break, Portugal looked a bit more optimistic going forward, but when things finally looked to be going well another disaster struck. Fabio Coentrao pulled up with a hamstring injury and was strechered off. Judging from initial reports it seems that he is out of the tournament. This a massive loss for Paulo Bento's side as so much of their attack is created through the left flank.

Even though the game was done and dusted, the referee had more to say. Eder was bundled over by Howedes in the box and the Portuguese team was certain the whistle was going to be blown. The Serbian referee however was unmoved and waved away protest. Although the penalty claim wasn't a certain one, it was much more of a claim than the one awarded to Germany. On the other end, Muller once again benefitted from a piece of atrocious defending to secure the match ball, and make it 4-0.

Cristiano Ronaldo summed up his evening on multiple occasions showing his frustration for the referee's decisions that always seemed to go against Portugal. CR7 showed flashes of brilliance but simply didn't have the supporting cast to make an impact. Hugo Almedia and Nani were poor while Eder's efforts harldy resulted in much.

Germany played well throughout most of the game, pressing for the ball immediately after losing it and playing at a fast tempo which made life very difficult for the Portuguese side. After scoring the tournament's first hat-trick, Muller is now top scorer and even at this stage looks likely to challenge for the Golden Ball.
