Belgium are into the World Cup quarter finals after beating the USA 2-1 in an enthralling 120 minutes of football in Salvador.

The fresh legs of Belgium's substitute striker Romelu Lukaku was enough to see off a resilient USA in extra time as he scored the 2nd and set up the 1st for Kevin De Bruyne in the first half of extra time.

This last 16 tie was the best of the round as it was exciting from the first minute as Tim Howard had to make a save 40 seconds in, as he denied Divock Origi's right footed shot from the right side of the box after he'd been found by Kevin De Bruyne and lost his marker.

USA did not offer a lot in the first half with their only main chance coming in the 21st minute when Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley exchanged a one two on the edge of the box before the former hit a pretty tame volley low to Thilbait Courtois' left who held the effort.

Belgium as well as having the first chance of the first half had the best also when in the 26th minute Jan Vertonghen robbed Graham Zusi in the middle of the pitch and then released De Bruyne on the left who cut inside from the left in the box before dragging his right foot shot wide.

Marc Wilmots' side got even more of a grip on the game in the second half and ten minutes in had a big chance through Origi who headed Toby Alderweireld's measured cross from the right onto the top of the bar. 15 minutes later and Origi was denied again this time by Howard's legs after following a great run into the box deep from the right by sub Kevin Mirallas the defender's stopped him only for the ball to break to the Lille striker whose sidefoot effort was turned away by Howard.

Five minutes later and Mirallas and Origi combined again with roles reversed as the striker dropped into the hole before sliding the ball through to Mirallas who saw his left foot effort from the left side of the box turned away by his Everton teamate's left foot.

At the start of extra time coach Wilmots made a brave decision by taking Origi who'd been playing well and replacing him with out of form Romelu Lukaku. As it was this was an inspired decision in that Lukaku announced himself at this World Cup in the extra half hour.

In just the third minute of extra time Lukaku rolled US defender Besler just inside their half and was costless to run down the right side and into that end of the box before pulling the ball back to De Bruyne who had to sort his feet out before feinting two defenders and pulling the ball back across Howard right footed into the bottom corner.

The last minute of the first half of extra time and De Bruyne and Lukaku combined again with the former Chelsea man feeding the current one down the left side of the box on a counter attack with Lukaku firing left footed past Howard at his near post.

Half time in extra time and it was Jurgen Klinsmann's time for an inspired substitution as he threw on Bayern Munich's young winger Julian Green who plays for their B team. Within two minutes this move had a result as Green caught fellow sub DeAndre Yedlin's deep cross from a long way out on the volley right footed but saw the ball spin just over Courtois' left hand and into the top corner.

Clealry the USA were not going to give up and just after the goal they had their best chance of completing the comeback. Yedlin who'd been forced on early in the game for the injured Fabian Johnson produced a deep cross from the right to the back post where sub striker Wondolowski headed down to the middle of the box for Jermaine Jones who flicked the ball just wide of the right post with the outside of his right post.

Belgium live to fight another day as once again the depth of their squad allows them to win a game late courtesy of the impact of their subs. Despite going out the USA can be proud of their efforts in the tournament and how they nearly came back in this game.
